Off The Wall -- Catalogue of Works

Nanette Balchin

Nanette's Bio for "Off the Wall": Nanette Balchin is a mixed media artist who incorporates her printmaking with her other loves -- the creation of artists' books and unique surfaces created through layering of collage , print, stitch and text. In printmaking Nanette explores collographs, monoprinting, cyanotype, relief and simple etching processes. With artist books I present a narrative where the book structure is as important as the images and text it contains. These may take on 2D or 3D forms or book forms.

Nanette has exhibited in Central Qld and beyond for over 14 years and has recently toured her encaustic work and books, assemblage work, paintings and prints for the regionally touring exhibition "Caravan of Curiosities". Nanette has also created fabric collage work on a theme of "Horizons" for an exhibition in Newcastle in October 2018 and for her entries into the 2019 Bayton Award and CQU Creates. Her most recent work is a collection of artists' books, collages and small assemblages for an exhibition at Blarney Books and Arts with Peta Lloyd called "Omnium Gatherum" which explores the themes of sea, blueness, alchemy, layer and touch.

Artist: Nanette Balchin

Name of artwork: Galaxy

Medium: Artist book using back to back concertina format, cyanotype print, collage, inks, images from National Geographic magazines, thread, Perspex covers

Dimensions: 140mm x 128mm x 235mm

Price: $100

Artist Statement: For "Off the Wall" Nanette asks... What can I make that is unique? What works do I already have that are worthy of reinvention and transformation? How can I present the print in an unconventional way that extends the concept to prints with a 3D structure?

"Galaxy" is an exploration of the power of an unusual book structure to create intrigue for the viewer. The double concertina structure gels well with the sense of distorted and unknown space that exists in galaxies. Some areas can be viewed while others are partly hidden, but there is beauty in what is hidden and unknown in our universe.

Michelle Black

Artist: Michelle Black

Name of artwork: 'Drawer full of memories'

Medium: Assemblage of beach finds with sand and sea water processed cyanotype print

Price: $350

Artist Statement: Evoking memories of place where weekends were filled with family time: children playing on the beach, collecting seashells, flotsam and jetsam, chasing soldier crabs and resting in the shade of a once majestic, but now fallen, she oak tree. Memories of a simpler time tied up in string and embraced by the roots of our family tree.

The cyanotype print in the background was created at the beach, with marks made by pressing the paper into tidal sandflats and soldier crab balls, exposing to the brilliant seaside sun and processed in seawater.

Linda Douglas

Artist: Linda Douglas

Name of artwork: The Book of Ridiculous Words (boxed)

Medium:(including type of ink, paper and special techniques used): Clay, oxides, linoprints on clay, linoprints on paper, Fabriano Rosapina 285gsm, block ink, coptic style handbound book

Dimensions: 25cm x 25cm

Price: $200.00

Artist Statement: Off the wall highlights the freakish, unorthodox or the downright weird, and this collection of ridiculous but actual words is just that. I've returned to working with and teaching linocuts on clay this last year and it's always interesting to discover the different ways we need to adjust a process in order to apply it to another art discipline.

Artist Statement: I loved the light shining through the petals of the original photograph, giving a delicate feel to it. The conversion to a cyanotype print has enhanced that almost ethereal look of the petals. Artist: Sally North, 2019

Medium: 4 x Gum Bichromate prints, up to 10 layers each print, Daniel Smith Water colour pigments, Yupo 230gsm paper. Queenslander early 1900's silky oak window frame.

Price: $220

Artist Statement: A memory from childhood, energy, bouncing off the walls inside, then outside, a blur of colour, running through the wet early morning garden... spider webs draping themselves all over us as we ran... squealing and throwing our arms around... hoping the spiders didn't end up on us!

Gum Bichromate is one of the first alternative photographic printing process that introduced colour to photographs in 1858. These gum bichromate prints are a mix of traditional and new methods and explore the depth of rainbow colours from a recent macro photograph of a spider web with the early morning sunlight shining through thousands of dew droplets. These prints reflect the shapes of the webs, the colours of the surrounding garden, and the reflections of the sky in the window the web was attached to.

Sambuddhananda Saraswati

Artist: Sambuddhananda Saraswati

Name of artwork: 'Awareness Now'

Medium: Mixed media on 300gsm Canson watercolour paper

Price: $285

Artist Statement: Please read the story.

Although not totally 'off the wall', this artwork has some off the wall features. The flags, like Tibetan prayer flags fluttering on a mountain pass, suggest the necessity to take climate change seriously. The most positive outcome is only because we all do something now!

'Smile with the flowers and the green grass.
Play with the butterflies, birds and deer.
Shake hands with the shrubs, ferns and twigs of trees.
Talk to the rainbow, wind, stars and the sun.
Converse with the running brooks
and the waves of the sea.
Develop friendship with your neighbours,
Dogs, cats, cows, human beings, trees, flowers, etc.
Then you will have a wide, perfect, rich, full life.
You will realize the oneness of unity of life.'

Phillipa Sturgess

Artist: Phillipa Sturgess

Name of artwork: 'A Burst of Form'

Medium: Mixed Media

Price: $120.00

Artist Statement: In this sculptural work, a 3-dimensional object breaks through the plane of a traditional framed work. As the impact tears open the paper, another layer is exposed suggesting an organic underpinning to the printed work. The work plays with the range of papers, shapes textures, and printing techniques to evoke the contrasting states.

Name of artwork: 'The Flowering of Form'

Medium: Mixed Media

Price: $120.00

Artist Statement: This work begins with the idea of a strict geometrical shape, the tetrahedron, being born out of an organic flowering structure. Although the hard metallic solid contrasts with the lotus-like flower, there are also links with the symmetry found in both nature and artifice. The work plays with the range of shapes, textures and patterns produced when various papers respond to different printing techniques
